Approval of Minutes: The minutes of the November 13, 2006 meeting were approved as circulated.

Introduction:  Clyde introduced Dr. Lori Govaars as the new director of OCET.   Audrey MacLean was introduced as a new member of the Chancellor’s Advisory Council.

Updates

·         Spring enrollment is 2555 (2600 Spring 06); 170 students are non-resident.  The Maui workforce is so short staffed that many of our students have taken jobs instead of attending school.  David announced that we will meet our targeted budget for tuition.

·         Swap meet documents have been signed; plans for clean-up and fencing of the area are being drafted.

·         Windmill: Clyde has met with the Kaheawa wind farm principals (Kent Smith and Hilton Unemori).  He has also met with Ulupalakua Ranch (Sumner Erdman).  Kaheawa has offered their site as one of MCC’s renewable technology project sites.  Ulupalakua is a possibility.  MCC could host a laboratory showing alternate energy solutions such as solar, wind, etc.

·         ABIT: WASC Senior Accreditation members will visit MCC Mar.8-9 to explore the provision of accelerating the ABIT degree program accreditation.  If all goes well, our May graduates will graduate with an accredited degree.

·         Culinary:  Chris Speere is the new Culinary Academy Coordinator.

·         Student Housing:  Dorms will be opening Fall 07.

·         Student Center:  Renovations should be completed Fall 07.

·         Grants:  MCC has brought in $7.8 million to date this year ($9.7 million in 2006).

·         Major Gifts Plan will be presented to the CAC following a meeting with John Morton and the CAC Retreat.

MCC Science Building:  The legislature approved $3.7 million for planning and design.  The governor has not released the funds.  A $37 million construction request will follow. Budget and Finance Director  Georgina Kawamura has asked staff to work on release of the initial funds.  Audrey MacLean suggested that since one of the Govemor’s priorities in her State-of-the-State Address was a focus on STEM, that MCC should send her a letter commending this notion and asking her to release the funds for the Science Building.

Council Composition/Committee Assignments:  Richard asked for approval to add two to three more people to the CAC.  There were no objections.  He also reviewed CAC Committee assignments.  A revised list of committees and members will be sent to the CAC.

Retreat:  Clyde presented the idea of a Council retreat with the following highlights:

·         Purpose:  College Direction (2yr/4yr level programs; 2yr-4yr transition)

·         Mission Statement:  Examine and revise.

·         Preparation for Community Forum and Strategic Plan Refinement:  Include information from Program Advisory committees, County, Mayor’s office, Maui Long Range planning and development committee, Focus Maui Nui, Chamber of Commerce, U.S. Department of Labor

·         Background:  Strategic Plan, accomplishments/ highlights (facilities, programs, services, enrollments, sustainability), McClain/Morton overview

·         CAC Questions:  County/community needs; program, services, research needs; student needs/demographics; faculty/staff requirements; retreat date/time

There was much discussion about the date and length of the retreat as well as possible facilitators.  A

questionnaire on preferences will be sent to the CAC.  Leona Wilson suggested that the public be invited to submit suggestions as well.

UH Foundation:  Susan Lampe gave an update on the Centennial Campaign.  The Campaign began July  2002 and will end June 2009.   Of the $250 million goal, $163 million has been raised to date.  The Community Colleges have raised $14 million of this total, and MCC has raised $3.5 million of the Community College total. The Campaign is an endowment campaign focusing on retaining the best faculty, attracting students, enhancing research, and endowing programs such as sustainability, marine biology, and cancer research.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:20 p.m.

Next meeting:   March 12, 2007

Respectfully submitted,
