Should you already own a relatively new laptop or choose not to purchase a Dell through the student program, your portable computer must meet the following minimum specifications.
Windows or Mac? - Whether you choose to bring a Windows laptop or a Mac is entirely up to you. While there are more Windows computers on campus, we continue to see an increasing number of students using Macs along with Microsoft Office for Mac installed.
Please consult with your instructor or program for specific computing requirements.

Windows Laptop
Dell is the preferred laptop model and offers a comprehensive, discounted package to UHMC students. However, students may choose any model meeting the minimum suggested specifications.
Operating System
There are significant differences between Windows 7 Professional and the Starter and Home editions. Features such as remote desktop and other potentially useful networking tools are not fully implemented in the Starter and Home editions. This applies as well to Windows XP editions. Depending on your academic program, it may be necessary to upgrade these versions of the operating system.

Mac Laptop
Macs are fully supported at UHMC and work with all of our campus systems. Keep in mind however that some of your classes may require software that only comes made for Windows computers.
Operating System
All Mac computers come with Apple’s proprietary Operating System (OS). The current OS is Snow Leopard. Newer Macs with Intel processors can run Mac OS and Windows on the same computer. If you choose to bring a Mac, it is strongly recommended that you install Windows using Bootcamp, which allows you to use your Mac as a Mac or a Windows computer. An even better option is to install Parallels or VMWare Fusion software which allows you to run Mac and Windows at the same time. Macs are only made by Apple Inc. Discounted pricing can be obtained by SNHU students at the UH Mona Bookstore or the Apple Education Store
