The Institute

Four-time Grammy Award winner George Kahumoku, Jr. and other professional Hawaiian musicians, will be leading this mentorship opportunity by providing his music industry knowledge and experience to connect students with professional Hawaiian music mentors.
The Institute for Hawaiian Music (IHM) will mentor & train 20 aspiring musicians in performing, singing, composition, repertoire development, recording techniques, and marketing of Hawaiian Music. The student will be taken from the beginning of their musical training to their career debut.

IHM will offer classes in guitar, ukulele, singing, keyboard, composition, music theory, repertoire development, dance, music industry business and marketing, and recording. Students will be given training on their instruments, voice, and harmony. They will be directed in repertoire growth, stage presence, and recording techniques.

Students will also complete courses in Hawaiian studies and Hawaiian language to understand the cultural roots of their art. This is considered essential to an appreciation for Hawaiian language songs.

By completion, students will produce a CD album ready for commercial release. Students of this program will be the future performing artists of Hawaii, trained in performing a wide range of music, playing Hawaiian instruments, knowing the history of the art, and able to communicate this knowledge to an audience.
